Members of the Upper House of Parliament on Friday strongly criticized the government for increasing the Haj fares and demanded re-examining the Haj Policy.
Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi, who defended the government move, failed to pacify the members following which the matter was referred to Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs asking it to re-examine the policy and present its report within seven days.
Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi, while responding to the criticism during the Question-Hour, said increase in fares was result of price hike and devaluation of rupee. However the government tried to shift minimum burden on the Hujjaj.
He said Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) proposed Rs 13,000 increase in PIA fares but on the directives of the president and the prime minister, only Rs6,000 increase was made. However, senators were not satisfied with the explanation of the minister adding the matter was of serious concern and it should be looked into. Earlier, the Upper House of the Parliament passed a bill further to amend the Pakistan Panel Code (The Pakistan Panel Code (amendment) Bill, 2010.
